Immediate Past President -Keith Fanta keith@thefantas.com : No report Industry Relations Keith Fanta: keith@thefantas.com : The German National Olympic Committee has reported that it will set up its base camp in Vancouver during next year’s Olympics instead of Whistler due to the unprecedented high cost and unavailability of accommodations. Whistler full service hotel rates during the games (February 12-28) are averaging around $311 per night with a two week minimum. Rates in Vancouver are averaging about half of that. CMH, also known as Canadian Mountain Holidays, a leader in heli-skiing, is going back to its roots with a ski touring program. For two weeks in April a group of ten clients will be dropped off at the top of a remote run in the Bugaboos, ski down, then strap on skins, release their heals, remove a layer and head back up on foot. At the end of the ski day the group will return by helicopter to the lodge. Price is $3,500 Canadian based on twin accommodation and inclusive of meals, guides, safety training and beacons. While the report I saw didn’t mention it, I’d hope the helicopter was also included. As you’re probably aware, it’s already a dangerous season with at least nine avalanche deaths in the US, many in-bounds. On December 29 at Jackson Hole routine avalanche hazard reduction work triggered a significant avalanche in the Headwall that caused considerable non-structural damage to the Bridger Restaurant. Two days earlier Jackson Hole also had an in-bounds avalanche caused fatality. The 2007-08 season set a modern day record for avalanche deaths in the US with 36. It’s probably good for us to remind our members that there is risk involved with our sport and attention should be paid to ski conditions and reports. For more info as well as training, there is a new resource available via the web from the US Forest Service. The website is www.fsavalanche.com and its title is Forest Service National Avalanche Center - Avalanche Awareness Website.
