Immediate Past President -Keith Fanta keith@thefantas.com : No report Industry Relations Keith Fanta: keith@thefantas.com As most of you are aware the list of airlines that are going to charge a special fee of $25 for a second piece of checked luggage includes Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Airways. A few weeks ago a few of us from the NSCF and other ski councils received favorable replies from Southwest Airlines. The reply I received stated: We have received numerous letters from members of your organization, and we’re so glad to learn that you all enjoy flying with Southwest Airlines! As a Company that LUVS sports of all kinds, it’s good to know that our baggage policies are helping to make air travel easier for our skiing Customers. Of course, we are not able to speak for the other carriers, but we feel it’s important to make an effort to increase our baggage handling efficiency with respect to our Customer’s needs. As such, we recently changed our free baggage allowance from three bags to two. However, we have maintained our special exceptions for sports equipment, including our allowance of a pair of skis, ski poles, and boots to count as “one bag,” thereby allowing Customers traveling with sports equipment to check another bag free of charge. Thank you for taking the time to let us know that you appreciate our consideration of Customers traveling with ski equipment. Your patronage, and more importantly, your friendship, mean the world to us, and we hope to welcome you and your ski buddies onboard again soon! To date American, Southwest and Frontier remain the only significant carriers not implementing the new checked luggage fee. The problem with Southwest is that they only sell seats five months out, not 330 days like the rest of the industry. We are considering a letter writing campaign to encourage Southwest to sell seats to groups at the industry standard 330 days. Frontier did recently announce that they were adding service into Aspen and a few other ski resort airports. This will be the first time in many years that United will have competition into Aspen. Two weeks ago the NSCF’s initiative was acknowledged on an Away.com travel guide blog along with a quote from myself regarding an article on airlines in general that had been printed in Outside magazine. Unfortunately it didn’t result in many replies. The NSCF website continues to get updates posted on this issue and includes a link to letter published in Outside Magazine to the air travel industry regarding the poor way they treat their customers in general. It was written prior to the United announcement This battle hasn’t been lost yet, so if you haven’t contacted American and Southwest yet please do so at once. Also, I believe any action we take has some potential to publicize ski and snowboard clubs, something all of us could use. Missed Reports : Alice Smith: $863 deposit from general meeting. Old Business: None. New Business: This is the final opportunity to make nominations from the floor. In May a vote will be taken by delegates and alternates who have attended three meetings.
